CNC machines

What is a CNC machine? CNC stands for Computer Numeric Control. It sounds complicated, but it’s not. Years ago it was simply called NC, or Numeric Control. Since then, computers have been added to control the machine.

In very simple terms, imagine a drilling machine. It’s a machine that drills holes. But before you can drill the hole, you have to loosen the drill chuck, insert the correct drill bit, drill the hole in the correct location, turn off the drill, and remove the drill bit. Manually, this can be very time-consuming and lead to fatigue if you are machining a lot of parts. This is a simple example, but when you add a turning or milling operation, the risk of errors is greater.

With a CNC machine, all of this drilling can be done automatically, rather than manually as described above. Machining needs to be precise, and whether you use a CNC lathe or milling machine, you need to make sure the part is correct. The computer takes a lot of the guesswork out of machining these parts. In fact, sometimes a CNC programmer can get bored watching the machine work.

But programming the machine is more involved than one might think. The operator must enter a series of instructions. The programming consists of about 50 words and tells the machine how fast to cut, how deep to cut, and where to cut.

What can you do with a Computer Numeric Control machine? In manufacturing, you can use this tool for milling, drilling, reaming, boring and countersinking. You can also use a CNC turning center to groove and thread parts. You can have multiple setups, including CNC lathes, CNC drilling and tapping equipment, CNC milling, and even CNC grinding.

EDM (electrical discharge machining) can also take advantage of CNC machining. EDM can be done either vertically or with wire. In a vertical EDM, an electrode is used to create a cavity for a plastic injection molding machine. In a wire EDM, a wire is used to cut metal for tooling. Because EDM is more closely related to making tools for other machines, the use of CNC machines with these machines is often overlooked.

CNC machines can also be used with routers in the woodworking industry. CNC machines can also be used for lettering and engraving.
